Trekking

3 Day Trek To Tamari Village

Day 1: Commencement of this tour is from Tufi Wharf - outrigger safari to Jebo Village. We will assemble gear and outriggers. Pack our gear, and then paddle to Jebo guesthouse - the beginning of our exploration of this amazing volcanic tropical fjord system. Breakfast and dinner will be based on “local food” primarily fish, bananas, root crops, and fruit for dinners; coffee/tea, fruit etc for breakfasts. For lunch we will eat dry food we bring with us (nuts, energy bars, and cookies) supplemented with local fruit. We will be sleeping inside the simple thatched guesthouse. (Our stay at Jebo guesthouse affords personalized relationships and family interaction with the locals.)

Day 2: We start trekking early in the morning. The first few hours is through open Kunai grass followed by intermittent splashes of jungle. You will be amazed at the outstanding views looking back from where we have come over the fiords. We walk along the ridges until we take a steep decent down to the Tamari River, be careful and watch your footing. This river is absolutely stunning and normally we would stop here for a swim and lunch. It is a flat walk cris-crossing the river for 2-3 hours until we get to our camp site that night which is in a Garden Haus beside the River. This trek is long and hard approximately 10-11 hrs but it is well worth the effort if you are a trekking enthusiast. It is also a very raw track. Not too many people have done this so the flora and fauna is fascinating.

Day 3: This morning we trek the short distance to Tamari Village and its beautiful black sandy beach. The rest of the day will be spent in the village. The village will perform a ‘sing sing’ which is a cultural dance and demonstrate tapa cloth making and rope making. Later in the afternoon the Tufi Resort boat will pick us up and take us back to the Resort.

Cost is AUD$165 per person per day (based on 4 pax). Boat pick-up is AUD$85 per person.

If you require a personal porter who will carry your large backpack for two days it will be an additional 50.00AUD per day.

Suicide Point Walk

Depart from the resort at 8.30 A.M. Return before lunch. Wear some sturdy shoes, bring insect repellent and sunscreen, and a bottle of water. We supply the cookies for your morning tea picnic.

The first half of the bush walk takes you up a gentle incline through Jagirua village with a population of just over one hundred people. Stop and talk to the locals and see how they live in their own little corner of Paradise. Past the village you enter some dense rainforest. Observe the flora and listen to the birds.

Now for the serious part of your trek... Get your heartbeat going and enjoy a good work-out.

A narrow spur divides McLaren’s Fjord and Tufi Fjord. Several hundred meters above sea level, shear cliffs on either side, will give the tramper spectacular views of the Fjords and Mount Travalgar. At the summit of this saddle we have our morning tea picnic. Then it’s all “down hill”…..

As you traverse down the perpendicular cliff face into Tufi’s Fjord, you are ready to either jump and commit suicide (hence the name) or call for a helicopter to pick you up…. Neither is an option! Once you are down at the waterfront, it was not as bad after all and you are pleased you made the effort.

Arrangements need to be made at the Reception at least one full day in advance.

The Kokoda Trail

The Kokoda Trail is by far the most popular trek in Papua New Guinea and takes between 6-9 days. It is a challenge and the difficulty of the track should not be underestimated. Kokoda is in the same province as Tuf which is Oro Province and Tufi presents the best relaxation and cultural experience for those to end their PNG trekking trip.

We recommend treks are limited to 15 people so you enjoy a more exclusive journey where you are an individual and not just part of a large group. Kokoda is getting out there and experiencing all the delights that the trail has to offer and most importantly of all having fun.

The long days include river crossing, steep and gradual ascends and descends. The 96 kilometre trek is predominately through rain forest. Usually conditions are wet and slippery as rain can be expected on most days. Temperatures range from 24-30 degrees celcius during the day and 16-24 degrees celcius at night.

This trail was made famous during WW11 and still bears the scars of a fierce campaign. For those of you who had loved ones fighting in PNG during WWII, this walk can be a very spiritual and emotional experience. Trekking in mud up to your knees and tricky river crossing indicates exactly the conditions under which our digger fought.

People embarking on this Kokoda adventure will be assured of the most spectacular scenery and have an unforgettable experience. The local people are Koiaris who are friendly and generous. Although ideally suited to walkers who are of reasonable fitness, training for this trek is necessary. Remember the fitter you are the more enjoyable the trek will be.

Treks are recommended depending on the fitness of the group and the trekkers time schedule to to be in either 6 days or 8 days.

The track can be walked from either direction, although some say that from Kokoda to Ower's Corner is easier, even though in that direction you actually have to climb an extra 550 metres in height.

The track can take anywhere from 5 days to 12 days to complete depending on fitness and rest time involved. Locals are renowned for being able to regularly complete it in 3 days. The track record for completion is by Papuan New Guinean John Hunt Hiviki who completed it in 22 hours, one minute and 14 seconds on 28 August 2005.

The best months to trek Kokoda is from April to September during the 'dry' season.

There are a number of guesthouses located along the way, some at villages others at traditional rest spots. The main villages passed through (from Ower's Corner) are Naoro, Menari, Efogi Creek 1 & 2, Kagi or Naduli (depending if shortcut taken), Alolo, Isurava, Hoi, Kovolo.

While in Papua New Guinea consider doing other activities such as Kayaking the majestic fjords of Tufi, climbing PNG’s highest mountain, Mount Wilhelm at 4509 metres and experiencing all of PNG Cultural Festivals and villages.

We recommend to book your Kokoda Trail Experience PNG Trekking Adventures (Pam Christie) www.pngtrekkingadventures.com. Please visit their web site to arrange your booking.
